Rediscovering the Importance of the Sense of Smell
I've been hearing stories of people around me who have lost their sense of smell or taste as a result of the aftereffects of COVID-19.
Although we don't usually think about it, a keen sense of smell is essential for detecting harmful substances and dangers.
A decreased sense of smell can result in the following problems:
Not noticing spoilage or abnormalities in food or drink
・Because your sense of taste becomes weaker, food becomes more seasoned and you consume too much salt and sugar.
・Because food doesn't taste good, people neglect their meals and end up with nutrient deficiencies
・Unable to detect the smell of smoke and cause food to burn
・Gas leaks and fires go unnoticed
Recent research has also shown that a decreased sense of smell can lead to a decline in motor function and may be associated with mild dementia or Alzheimer's disease.
In fact, your sense of smell declines with age.
Other causes include allergic rhinitis caused by dust mites and pollen, and chronic sinusitis.
Your sense of smell can also be impaired by catching a cold or hitting your head or face hard.
Anyone can suffer from anosmia.
But you can also try to be preventative.
Hands-on! Olfactory training
Here's a simple way to train your sense of smell.
Prepare two to four types of essential oils, such as eucalyptus, clove, lavender, orange, peppermint, and frankincense.
Smell each scent directly from the bottle for 10 seconds.
Do this twice a day, morning and night.
You can also use a diffuser to spread the scent of essential oils throughout the room.
This training stimulates your sense of smell and your brain by consciously smelling different scents, so be sure to choose essential oils that are 100 % natural.
You cannot expect a brain reaction from products that contain synthetic fragrances or are diluted with alcohol.
It is effective to combine scents with distinctly different scents, such as citrus, floral, herbal, and spicy.
